Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

Author: Gregory Maguire

Age: Upper high school to adult.

Genre: Historical Fiction, Fairy Tale

Topics for Discussion:

Summary: This retelling of the Cinderella story gives voice to one of the infamous stepsisters. In this re-vision, Cinderella is indeed more beautiful than her new siblings but is almost painfully shy. Rather than encounter the unknown world, she had much rather sit in the kitchen near the fire and help with the household chores. When the family finances begin to dwindle, the stepmother decides to take advantage of the prince's visit, dressing her daughters up (especially the highly intelligent one) as much as possible to try to catch the eye of the prince. The daughter knows that a prince could never fall in love with her plain features and conspires against her mother's plan. Still attempting to secure financial stability, the stepsister dresses Cinderella in a fine gown and ensures that the prince will have an opportunity to see her beauty. Little did she know that upon meeting the prince, their intellects would draw them together...that is, until Cinderella shows up at the ball.

Book Review: I've always been enchanted by the fairy tale of Cinderella, so it's not surprise that I'm very fond of this novel. The writing style is rather plain, which doesn't usually leave a very lasting impression on me, but that does make this a very easy read.

Multimedia:

Christian Perspectives: I don't really have much to say about this one either way. I cannot recall anything specific that was objectionable in the novel, though nothing particularly "uplifting" either. Overall, it's just a fun read, especially for those familiar with the various Cinderella tales.

Links and/or texts for further study: You can read many different variations of the Cinderella tale at SurLaLune. They also have an annotated version of the tale.
