Lord of the Rings

It's always great to have a partner in crime (costuming), even if I have to do all the sewing.  This first costume, which I made for my brother for Fellowship of the Ring, is just something we thought would look cool and kind of elvish.  The patten for the pants is just a basic elastic waist pant; I think we used a pattern for sweatpants.  The tunic is the same pattern we used for the jedi tunics (see the Star Wars page); it is a pattern my mom bought back in the '70s.  Under the tunic he is wearing a purchased shirt with a mandarine collar.  I made the cloak using Simplicity 9887, following all the directions without modification.

For Two Towers, he wore the pants and cloak that he had previously, but I made a new shirt and tunic for him.  For the tunic, I made Butterick 5656 out of black velveteen with satin lining.  (Really easy pattern.  Went together quickly and fit perfectly.)  There is a green braided trim around the neck and down the front opening.  The shirt was made using Butterick 3072 out of a light green crinkle sheer drapery fabric.  I'm very glad we chose such a lightweight fabric for this one because there is actually a little too much fabric gathered into the collar for my taste, which didn't show up so much in the sheer fabric.
