1890s Linen

Costume Page

I took a comparison photo of this parasol next to a door so that you could get a sense of how tall this one is.  This one was also damaged during shipping (thanks USPS!) and will be a bit more complicated to fix.  There actually isn't anything holding the handle on at this point--it comes right off.  I'm going to talk to my grandfather about making a replica of the handle.

The fabric of this one also seems to be a fine linen with a tiny cutwork (?) design around the edge.  As you can see, it is in pretty poor condition and will need to be recovered.

Fortunately, my grandfather managed to mend this one. He rebuilt the missing section of the handle and then reattached it. I was then free to begin working on my first serious recovering project. (I had done one before, but using a modern reprodution parasol.)

The underlayer is a purple/pink silk shantung. The overlay is embroidered netting (sorry, I don't know the elegant term for netting.) with pink flowers, green leaves and such, and a very cute scalloped edge. I lined the interior with a cream colored silk habotai.

The pictures here are actually in-progress photos; I still haven't taken any finished ones. It now has a pleated bit of fabric at the top, and I think I've managed to correct the bent rib so that the shape is more uniform when it is open.
